Malta Gozo Bus Tour

The island of Gozo is a smaller island in the Maltese archipelago accessible by a vehicle and people ferry on the northside of Malta. It has its own hop-on hop-off buses to get around for a day trip if you like that option. We do and so we did it. This one felt a bit rushed at times because the next bus was 45 minutes and we were fighting a clock for getting back to the ferry for our arranged transportation. It was still a good trip with the oldest megalithic temples at Ġgantija and the former Azure Window at Dwejra Bay.

Ġgantija is the earliest of the megalithic temples in Malta. Their makers erected the two Ġgantija temples during the Neolithic (c. 3600–2500 BC), which makes these temples more than 5500 years old. It's the world's second oldest freestanding structures on Earth after the discovery of Göbekli Tepe in Turkey. Ġgantija is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the other Megalithic Temples of Malta.

The scenery at Dwejra Bay is amazing. It's the location of the former Azure Window which fell into the sea during stormy weather on 8 March 2017. The Azure Window can be clearly seen in Game of Thrones season 1 as the location for the Dothraki wedding between Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen. It's still an amazing area without the Azure Window and you can imagine the Dothraki horde partying and killing each other on the flat area there.

that big slab was moved into place a thousand years before the pyramids in Egypt

a Dothraki horde was here for a wedding once

the Azure Window pillar and arch was here but fell in 2017

the bus is coming!
