A great aspect of living near Gangaramaya Temple is that the Buddhist events are a short walk away. This weekend was the celebration of Vesak. The streets near us were filled with festive lights and displays.
Vesak, also known as Buddha Day or Buddha Purnima, is the holiest and most important festival in the Buddhist calendar. It commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing (Parinirvana) of Gautama Buddha, all believed to have occurred on the same lunar day.
We could see some of the lights along the streets when they came on, but the fireworks were mostly obscurred by a neighboring building so we needed to walk down and see what was going on. There was a lot going on.

I was getting tired of the crowds, so it was very nice to have a short walk back home. This was definitely a popular event.
