Al Ein UAE

The 5-day pass for Big Bus includes an all day bus tour to Al Ain near the Oman border. This day trip to the ‘Oasis City’ of Al Ain includes eight key landmarks such as Al Qattara, Al Hili Fort, Al Hili Tomb, Qasr Al Muwaiji, National Museum, Al Ain Palace and Al Jahili Fort. It was an interesting day exploring the earlier history of the emirates and how things were not that long ago before they became a rich oil country.

I'll just let these pics speak for themselves for the most part. The one thing I'll mention is that I imagined an oasis to be like the movies where there's a pond out in the middle of the desert with vegetation around it. The two we visited here were developed by people with irrigation manually diverted where it's needed to maintain the plants. This is desert farming with walls and forts around them to protect their hard work. Basically, an oasis is a fortified farm with water diverted there from a mountain.

Abu Dhabi, 1948, the fort was the only notable building in the coastal town made up of scattered palm frond huts. 1948!
