Puffins at Borgarfjarðarhöfn Eystri Iceland

Puffins deserve their own post. Look at that face! They spend the entire winter floating out at sea, but fortunately they were home for the summer by the time we got there.

According to National Geographic, puffins are completely waterproof and spend epic lengths of time at sea, with fledglings riding the waves for a full two years before ever setting foot on land. They can even drink seawater and expel the excess salt out of glands in their nostrils.

These puffins nest at Borgarfjarðarhöfn Eystri from about May 1st to Aug 15th. These hardy birds hang out in the open ocean for the winter. Why don't they want their comfy nest holes during the harsh winter? They're Viking birds! Nah, I'm guessing they don't want to shovel the snow off of the porch.

This wasn't a zoo. It was their natural habitat where humans have built stairs to allow other humans to visit them. I'm amazed they figured out how to write in Icelandic and English for that sign telling us to keep out of their part of the island. A truly remarkable bird! 😏

Other birds. Puffin neighbors. Not important. Moving on...

Puffins!
watcha lookin at?!?

not fully in the burrow, hole, house, mansion, or whatever it is down there

Other birds have a bigger house and puffins only have holes. It seems unfair unless the puffin holes are portals to a bird paradise. Could be. We couldn't see inside.

human walkways spoiling their nice puffin grounds

humans keep out! excellent bird penmanship

I have many pics of being snubbed by the puffins like this. It's fine. They're still cool birds.

cool photo (if I do say so myself) (yes, I did)

are they checking out the rental car for a bombing run?

Some of them were eyeballing us pretty hard here, so we left.
Who needs that kind of attention?
