More Iceland Ring Road Random

I skipped some good random pictures along Iceland's ring road. We did a lot of coastal driving and had great views to soak in everywhere. There were lots of ocean views, mountains, and small waterfalls to see everywhere. There was a red chair bolted to a rock.

We live in a great city with lots of beautiful art nouveau architecture. We're surrounded by nature hikes for soaking in the natural beauty of Latvia. However, we've been here nearly three years. You start losing the sense of flavor when you marinate in the same sauce for a long time.

Everyone doesn't travel, but I think it's an important tool to reawaken our senses. The contrast of somewhere else and here exposes us to new environments and renews our appreciation of wherever our long-term here is. You may not travel and wonder why so many people have an apparent addiction to it. I think that about sums it up.

Red Chair

Some Google Map reviewers don't like the red chair. We loved the red chair. We were fortunate to see it. Atlas Obscura appears to track it and it was gone a few times.

Along one of these remote stretches, between Höfn and Egilsstadir in eastern Iceland, a bizarre sight cuts through the isolation. A giant red chair is inexplicably bolted to a rock in the middle of a mossy field.

There are few buildings around and a whole lot of sheep. A small pull-off is all that marks it as a stopping place, and there is no indication as to why the chair was placed there.

The oversized chair is taller than a human being, and the bright red pops against the blue sky. The back of the chair faces the Atlantic Ocean, and some mountains can be seen in the distance, completing this picturesque—if surreal— scene.

Update March 2019: It has been reported that the chair is no longer there.
Updated May 2019: The chair has been put back.
Updated May 2020: The chair has currently been removed.
Updated May 2021: The chair has been put back.

Mánárbakki Museum

I check Google Maps for interesting places before starting the next driving segment. It augmented our tour guidebook. The personally owned Mánárbakki Museum just a little north of Húsavík was an unexpected find. We had a personal tour as the only customers on a Sunday morning from the owner and collector.

takk fyrir komuna! thanks for coming!
