Salto El Sapo y Salto Hacha

The first amazing experience in Canaima was the falls (salto) of El Sapo (toad) and Hacha (ax). We took the boat across the lagoon and our indigenous guide took us on a hike to show us the local environment. He then lead us to, under, and through the falls in several spots. I emphasize through because we've never been wetter as the falls pulverized water into us. I had a waterproof camera but it fogged up and the lens was frequently covered in spray so some of these pics are a bit psychedelic.

foamy water from all of the shaving cream use upstream from the falls (or maybe not)

quick, follow that man! he walked fast!

nature is done and now on to getting very wet

trying to see out and trying to look up

yes, let's keep following that crazy guide... through the falls to the outside!

our path from under the falls to outside is roughly in the middle of this next pic

ah, finally outside and at the top of the falls for a bit

back on the boat, are we heading back?

not heading back, instead we hike up to the other waterfall and do it all again!

I imagined strolling through a hurricane might have felt like being under and inside these waterfalls

On the boat ride back the sun hit the waterfall just right to build out a rainbow from just a small bit to a full rainbow over the falls. I grabbed the waterproof camera as quick as a I could but it came out a bit blurry. I also couldn't capture the full rainbow with just one shot since we so close to the spectacle. You can get a sense of it in these pics that don't really do it justice. It kept us in awe of the beauty unfolding in front of us and it fortunately kept with us a while. This was just the beginning of seeing so many natural splendors that we were fortunate to witness with our very own eyes. This was just the first day!
