Gellért Hill and Buda Castle

We started our first full day in Budapest by taking a really long walk. We started from our hotel near Liberty Square and crossed the Chain Bridge (above) to get from the Pest side to the Buda side of the Danube River. Why did the tourists cross the bridge? Well, to get to the other side... and make a long hike to Gellért Hill and the Liberty Statue (below).

Why did the tourists cross from one hill to the next? Well, to get to Buda Castle which looks so nice on the next hill (below). We did stay a bit and check out the Hungarian National Gallery but I'll put that in a post about museums.

We didn't cover all of the Buda Castle area and needed to come back the following weekend for that excursion. We crossed back over Chain Bridge and proceeded to collapse at the hotel. Google Maps claims it was nearly 8 miles of walking for this. I believe it.

Next are the various pictures along the way with very little commentary.

Google photos does this weird thing with sorting photos sometimes so these are from later when we're heading up the hill...

...and these are from earlier before crossing the bridge. Come on Google Photos, give us an album sort feature that works by filenames!

Liberty Statue at the top of the hill

A bare-fist St George and the dragon?

On the way down Gellert Hill towards Buda Castle is a neat little Garden of Philosophy

Near there is this really cool Buda and Pest overlooking Budapest

We made it over to the backside of Buda Castle

This face was redone and it looks like a weird match

St. Stephen's Basilica (Szent István Bazilika) on the way back to the hotel. What a walk!
